It's American Craft Beer Week so drink up!

This week is American Craft Beer Week and this year's event is focusing on beer and food. However, the main focus is on the American craft beer industry in general and the role it plays in our towns and cities. Most local breweries and brewpubs provide a lot more than just beer to their communities and this is a chance for all of us to both recognize and support them.

Here are some ideas on how you can celebrate American Craft Beer Week:

*Take a tour of a local brewery. Most of them offer free tours with samples at the end. How can you go wrong with that?

*Fill a growler. Its some of the freshest beer you can get and growlers are good for the environment!

*Turn a friend on to craft beer. Slap that can of (insert American macro beer name here) Light out of his/her hand and replace it with a locally made light ale or lager (or any other locally brewed beer for that matter!). You just may change the way they think of beer.

*Eat lunch and/or dinner at a brewpub this week.

HERE is a link to brewery sponsored American Craft Beer Week events nationwide!

GET OUT AND SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BREWERY!

We need a summer beerfest here in Portland!

I am having a hard time figuring out why Portland doesn’t have a summer beerfest? I really don’t understand. Summer is when the weather is nice, that is when lots of people want to drink beer, Maine has lots of summer beers and that is when there is a serious tourist crowd that would eat it up (or drink it up) and provide lots of revenue for the city and state.b

I'd like to propose the following and would love to take this further if anyone would like to join me in this pursuit:k

Outdoor beerfest during July or August in Portlandk

VIP invites to all Maine breweries and brewpubs

k

Invite select other New England breweries/brewpubs

k

Have live music and local food

jk

No annoying long lines that connect to one another like the Maine Brewer’s Festival

d

No charge except for beer sampling. Hey, bring the kids!

kd

I think this is a great opportunity not only for beer drinkers, beer brewers and for Portland but also for out of state breweries to share their beers with us here in Maine. Its also a great opportunity for local food vendors to promote themselves.

How can anyone say no? I get excited just thinking about the possibilities…
