Brewery: Bragdy Gwynant
Location: Capel Bangor, Wales
Beer (cwrw in Welsh) is not all that unique to Wales. The Welsh are quite fond of beer (I found this out while living in Swansea, Wales for year while in college). Wales is the home of Brains Brewery, brewer of some excellent beers, including a beer brewed in honor of poet and writer Dylan Thomas. It was also where the first beer outside the US was canned and it can also lay claim to its own style of beer, braggot (a beer brewed with equal parts honey and malt).
No, this place is not unique because it is Welsh. Bragdy Gwynant is unique because it holds the present title of smallest brewery in the world. The tiny "brewery" is located near the town of Aberystwyth, and is set up in the former outside toilet of the Tynllidiart Arms next door.
Bragdy Gwynant brews its one beer, Cwrw Gwynant, which is a cask ale, in an area that is less than five square feet in size. One can only imagine how cramped that must be. The beer itself is brewed using a "secret recipe" according to brewer and coincidental neighbor Chris Giles. The owners of the inn and the brewery, Mark and Margeret Phillips, go on to say that the brew is made using mainly local ingredients.
Cwrw Gwynant is only served at the Tynllidiart Arms so don't look for it on the shelves anytime soon!
